Well, this is the one. The X Factor, Iron Maiden's tenth studio album, is probably the most controversial record they have ever put to tape. Yes, this was the first album not to feature the thunderous vocals of Bruce Dickinson since Killers way back in 1981. Outrage swirled about when the announcement was made, and before long the band drafted in former Wolfsbane singer Blaze Bayley to fill Dickinson's epic shoes. Bayley sported a lower voice that resembled almost nothing to the sound Dickinson had supplied the band for seven studio releases. It is well known that this is the first of two records Iron Maiden created with Blaze Bayley singing. What a lot of people don't seem to realize, however, is that The X Factor breathed new life into a legendary band that had previously released two underwhelming subpar albums with its larger than life lead singer.

This is a truly immense, atmospheric, and haunting album. Opener "Sign of the Cross" is unquestionably one of the greatest songs Steve Harris has ever penned. Every song on this album is enjoyable. "Lord of the Flies" and "Man on the Edge" are the two somewhat standard shorter tracks, and they both get the job done and are quite pleasing to my ears. "Fortunes of War" contains a very heartfelt intro and I still get chills every time I hear it. Other songs such as "The Aftermath" and "The Unbeliever" take longer to get into, but there is an undeniable power held within if one seeks to find it. "2 A.M." is simply beautiful, and is one of the more curious songs in the group's catalogue. Blaze Bayley does a solid job throughout the record, and he does not sound out of place in the slightest. Truly, The X Factor is, to my ears, a great record from a legendary metal band.

Why is it then that so many people hate this album? I think it is because of two things. The first is the production, which I admit is not one of the best the group has received during this course of fifteen studio releases. The second, of course, is that Blaze Bayley is here and Dickinson is nowhere to be found. This is a dark album, as I have already said, and Dickinson's voice is not suited to sing on it like Bayley's is. I love Bruce with all of my heart, but this is one moment in time when he would have sounded out of place on an Iron Maiden album. The "Blaze Experiment" only worked once as I feel the next album is a huge step down in quality than this one. This is an album for open-minded people who can handle legends trying something different and can appreciate bleak music. Listen to it in the dark, perhaps with candlelight. Decyzja Bruce'a Dickinsona o opuszczeniu Iron Maiden była wielkim szokiem dla fanów grupy. Oto po nagraniu wielkiej płyty, jaką bez wątpienia jest "The Fear Of The Dark", jeden z najlepszych wokalistów w muzycznym świecie odchodzi z zespołu, by poświęcić się karierze solowej! To był naprawdę wielki cios. Na marginesie warto dodać, że ta kariera poszła Bruce'owi całkiem nieźle, a niektóre kawałki są naprawdę świetne, by wspomnieć tylko "Tears of the Dragon" czy "Chemical Wedding". No, ale to nie o Bruce D. ma być tu mowa, ale o Dziewicy, wróćmy więc do tematu... Po długich poszukiwaniach zespół zdecydował, iż nowym "głosem" zostanie Blaze Bayley, wokalista Wolfsbane. Kapela ta miała okazję supportować Ironów, więc ci mogli dobrze zapoznać się z Blazem. Dodatkowo nastąpiła zmiana na stanowisku producenta - Martina Bircha, który przeszedł na emeryturę, zastąpili Steve Harris oraz Nigel Green. W związku z tym nazwa pierwszej płyty, nagranej po tych roszadach, była jak najbardziej na miejscu. Brzmiała ona " The X Factor" - a "X" jest symbolem tego co nieznane, niepewne. Innym aspektem symboliki Xa to fakt, że była to dziesiąta płyta w dorobku Maiden'ów.

Żeby długo nie owijać w bawełnę, uważam, że w tym przypadku ten "X" nie kryje za sobą niczego specjalnego. W mojej bowiem opinii Bayley jest raczej przeciętnym wokalistą, a od Bruce'a dzielą go lata... dźwiękowe. Na pewno głos Blaze'a ma pewne zalety: jest głęboki i niewątpliwie mroczny, ale gdzie mu tam do skali, siły i dynamiki z jaką śpiewa Dickinson. Ale nie tylko ten głos powoduje, iż uznaję tę płytę za najgorszą w karierze Maiden. Po prostu zdecydowana większość piosenek nie ma tej ikry i mocy, za którą zawsze uwielbiałem ten zespół. Pewnie, że Harris i spółka grają nieźle - bo też muzycy tej klasy nie mogą zejść poniżej pewnego poziomu - ale nic ponad "nieźle" nie można o tym albumie powiedzieć. A już szczególnie Nicko musiał się strasznie nudzić, gdyż prawie że nie ma kiedy się wyszaleć.

Oczywiście można znaleźć i dobre utwory, ale co tu kryć - nie ma ich za wiele. Najbardziej podoba mi się "Judgement In Heaven" - klimatyczne i dynamiczne nagranie, nabierające tempa i energii z każdą kolejną zwrotką. Ma też naprawdę świetne solo. Kolejne warte wspomnienia jest "Man On The Edge", które wyszło na singlu, a które zostało zainspirowane filmem "Upadek" z Michaelem Douglasem (swoją drogą świetny film). Fantastyczny jest tu bas Steve'a, a zwariowane tempo nieco przypomina dwie pierwsze płyty Ironów. Niezłe na "X" są także "Lord Of The Flies" (znów piosenka "filmowa" - nawiązuje do "Władcy Much"), "Aftermath" z wyjątkowo niezłym wokalem Blaze'a oraz klimatyczne "After The War" ze świetnymi, przeciągłymi gitarami. Kilka następnych piosenek można scharakteryzować następująco: ciekawy początek, a potem jest dość monotonnie i statycznie - bez pary ("The Unbeliever", "Edge Of Darkness", "Blood On The Words Hand", "2 AM"). Natomiast zdecydowanie nie podoba mi się pozbawiony energii, zalatujący gotykiem "Sign Of The Cross" oraz nudnawy "Look For The Truth".

W sumie "The X Factor" jest dość przeciętna. Uważam ją za najsłabszą w dorobku Dziewicy. Oczywiście można jej przosłuchać, co również ja od czasu do czasu czynię, ale album ten jakby przelatuje obok słuchacza. Nie wciąga, nie porywa tak jak inne płyty Maiden. Najlepszym wyznacznikiem poziomu jest odpowiedź na proste pytanie: jakie nagranie z tej płyty umieściłbym na płycie "The Best Of Iron Maiden"? Odpowiedź jest równie prosta: żadne. I to właściwie powinno wystarczyć za całą recenzję.

Na pocieszenie można jeszcze stwierdzić, iż było to przysłowiowe "dno" w karierze Ironów, gdyż już następna płyta - "Virtual XI" - jest znacznie lepsza, a wydana rok temu "Brave New World" - jest znakomita. ---Tomasz "YtseMan" Wącławski, rockmetal.pl
