Hogjaw is a band of southern rock. It comes straight from Arizona. It consists of Jonboat Jones vocals and guitar, Jimmy Rose lead guitar, Elvis DD bass and Kwall drums. The band boasts more than friendly influences: The Marshall Tucker Band, The Allman Brothers Band, ACDC, Charlie Daniels, ZZtop, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Jr., Hank III, Blackfoot, Pure Prairie League, Boy Named Sioux, Elvis Bishop, Mountian, CW McCall, Jerry Reed, Goose Creek Symphony, HellRancho, Clut. Good, very good influences.
Way Down Yonder is their sixth album. It will be released on January 26, 2018. And it is clear that the American combo offers quality of compositions. Jonboat Jones is a typical singer of this kind of music. Powerful and broken voice. Bred to bourbon too. Jack Daniels is never far away.
Back Home Today is a typical example. But To Hell With The Rest will make you nod and stamp one's foot. Greasy guitars and a rhythm section as Blackfoot and Lynyrd Skynyrd offer. Guaranteed saloon atmosphere. A bourbon please! Brown Water is very powerful too. Punchy guitars and killer rhythmic.
North Carolina Way is worthy of a road trip in the desert, the wind blows and raises the sand. Same mood for Way Down Yonder. The radio is ready to explode under the blows of guitars. Big drums for a Dark Horse with percussive guitars but slow down nevertheless. The time for us to catch our breath.
Redemption is probably the best song of the album. Worthy of the best slow titles of Lynyrd Skynyrd, still king of southern rock. Always incisive, powerful and clear guitars too. Jonboat Jones is a formidable singer. The enormous weight of southern rock's legacy on his shoulders. But the guy is doing well his job. Superb Redemption.
It starts again with Got A Pencil and Never Surrender. We are almost knocked out, the powerful guitars leave us under the funnel. Beast of Burden does not free us from this hold. Fans of a band like Nashville Pussy will find their account for sure. The last title Talk About Fishin' is a mix of country music and southern rock. With banjo, acoustic guitars. Typical southern American.
Good, well-constructed songs, fat guitars, a hoarse voice as we like them. Way Down Yonder is an album of true southern rock. ---rocknreviews.net
