Simultaneously more pop-oriented and experimental than either Ghost in the Machine or Zenyatta Mondatta, Synchronicity made the Police superstars, generating no less than five hit singles. With the exception of "Synchronicity II," which sounds disarmingly like a crappy Billy Idol song, every one of those singles is a classic. "Every Breath You Take" has a seductive, rolling beat masking its maliciousness, "King of Pain" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" are devilishly infectious new wave singles, and "Tea in the Sahara" is hypnotic in its measured, melancholy choruses. But, like so many other Police albums, these songs are surrounded by utterly inconsequential filler. This time, the group relies heavily on jazzy textures for Sting's songs, which only work on the jumping, marimba-driven "Synchronicity I." Then, as if to prove that the Police were still a band, there's one song apiece from Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, both of which are awful, as if they're trying to sabotage the album. Since they arrive on the first side, which is devoid of singles, they do, making the album sound like two EPs: one filled with first-rate pop, and one an exercise in self-indulgence. W marcu 1983 roku Sting, mieszkający przez kilka miesięcy na Jamajce w domu Iana Fleminga (tego od Bonda), komponuje „Every Breath You Take”, najpopularniejszy przebój The Police. Podobno lider Policjantów miał wtedy tak silną wenę twórczą, że nie dopuszczał do siebie myśli, by utwór ten nie mógł stać się hitem. Oczywiście hit powstał, do dziś pozostaje jednym z najczęściej przerabianych utworów. Przebojem w skali światowej okazała się również płyta „Synchronicity”, najbardziej różnorodna w dyskografii The Police, stworzona z dużym rozmachem aranżacyjnym, w niektórych momentach na wskroś popowa. Album powstał w szczególnym czasie - dni zespołu były już policzone, idea wspólnego grania dogorywała, konflikty wewnątrz grupy stanowiły plan pierwszy. Sam tytuł to odwołanie do teorii psychiatry Carla Gustava Junga, którą interesował się Sting. Zgodnie z nią, zbieżne w czasie wydarzenia, niemające bezpośredniego związku ze sobą, mają istotny sens symboliczny. Sens ten przytacza lider w obu częściach tytułowego utworu, podobnie jak uderza przewrotną metaforą w „Walking In Your Footsteps”, gdzie bomba atomowa skonstruowana przez człowieka ma rekompensować jego słabość. Osobisty, depresyjny odcień przynoszą kolejne hity: „King Of Pain” i „Tea In The Sahara”, których melodyka i klimat noszą już w sobie znamiona solowego Stinga. Po nagraniu płyty i odbyciu trasy promującej album The Police zawieszają działalność na cały 1984 rok. 28 marca 1985 The Mirror podaje oficjalną informację o zakończeniu działalności formacji.
