Scotsman John Paul Young carries a pleasant enough tune, and the chartbusting title titan is a sublime '70s summer breeze. But except for his mellow cool and a few Rod Stewart moves, Young does not bring much to the party. Which doesn't matter since Aussie powerhouses Vanda & Young (no relation) are the toastmasters; the brains from the Easybeats obviously knew they were onto something with the breezy lead single, because both "The Day That My Heart Caught Fire" and "Lost in Your Love" seem like the same song with different titles. "Open Doors" sports Supertramp keys, and "Things to Do" stirs up the mix, but otherwise this platter settles for smooth '70s sailing, and nothing's wrong with that. Vanda & Young got this sweetness out of their systems immediately for the wonderfully warped Flash and the Pan. Of course, "Love Is in the Air" continued to blow through the public consciousness as a TV commercial jingle. ---Whitney Z. Gomes, AllMusic Review
An international hit for John Paul Young in 1978, ‘Love Is in the Air’ reached No. 3 on the Australian charts, No. 5 in the UK and No. 7 in the US.
The song was written by songwriting and producing partners Harry Vanda and George Young (Vanda and Young). In 1992 it became the theme song to Baz Luhrmann's debut feature Strictly Ballroom; the ‘Ballroom Mix’ climbed the Australian charts and helped make ‘Love is in the Air’ the 'Most played Australian song overseas' according to APRA.
JPY has performed it at many significant events including the Closing Ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, and most recently at a Marriage Equality street party in October 2017. The song is also an unofficial anthem for supporters of Dundee United football club in Scotland, who regularly sing it at matches. ---nfsa.gov.au
