Po sześciu długich latach płytowego milczenia przypomina o sobie małopolski Totem. Zespół, który zwrócił uwagę metalowego podziemia bardzo obiecującym materiałem „Intro”, potem był nieco inny (czytaj: cięższy i bardziej nowoczesny) wydany przez Empire album „Day Before The End”, a później... cisza. Jak się okazało – cisza przed metalową burzą, rozpętaną bardzo ciekawym krążkiem, jakim bez wątpienia jest „Let’s Play”. Ten materiał śmiało można pokazać na każdym liczącym się zagranicznym rynku muzycznym, obciachu nie będzie.

W składzie Totem nastąpiła jedna istotna zmiana: za mikrofonem nie stoi już Auman (aktualnie Frontside), wszystkie partie wokalne należą do Wery, jednego z najlepszych kobiecych głosów w metalu (nie tylko na rodzimym poletku). A teraz już do zawartości „Let’s Play”... „Stage One” funkcjonował pod roboczym tytułem „Meszuga” i faktycznie – skojarzenia z Meshugahh są jak najbardziej na miejscu. W ogóle ten materiał zabija precyzją grania i potęgą dźwięku. Co bardzo ważne: nie nuży słuchacza. Dużo się tutaj dzieje w poszczególnych utworach: pojawiają się zwolnienia, łagodniejsze fragmenty. Ale tylko po to by za chwilę jeszcze bardziej zaatakować odbiorcę porcją hałasu („Cross-Fire”). Kawałki pod numerem 4 i 5 pokazują dwa odmienne oblicza Wery: „Inside” klimatyczny, balladowy, z dość chwytliwym refrenem, natomiast w „A Song 4U” nie ma przebacz, prawie czterominutowa, ostra hardcore’owa jazda (zresztą kawałek ten na próbach ochrzcili mianem „Siekana” i trudno o lepszy tytuł). Taki „Another You” do łatwej, lekkiej i przyjemnej muzy też trudno zaliczyć, w refrenach otrzymujemy wręcz deathmetalowy growl... W „Imprisoned Mind” również nie mają litości dla uszu odbiorcy (w sensie, że czad miemiłosierny, a nie że kawałek słaby...). „My City Game” wprawdzie rozpoczyna się balladowo, ale potem thrashowa młócka rusza na całego. Najdłuższy kawałek zostawili na finał: ponad sześciominutowy „A Perfect Lie”, wyróżniający się na płycie nie tylko długością...

Na polskiej scenie metalowej zespołów o (co najmniej) europejskim formacie działa bez liku. Problem w tym, że odzew na ich płyty i koncerty jest – delikatnie mówiąc – znikomy, co skutecznie zniechęca je do kontynuowania działalności. Bo ileż w końcu można dokładać do tego interesu. Rozumiem: pasja, miłość do muzyki, ale z czegoś rodzinę trzeba utrzymać i rachunki opłacić... Zatem nic dziwnego, że przerwy między kolejnymi albumami sięgają sześciu lat. Dobrze, że „Let’s Play” w ogóle ujrzał światło dzienne, bo znaleźć dziś w Polsce wydawcę jest równie trudno jak dobrych piłkarzy w Ekstraklasie. It seems that I have a sweet tooth for female fronted bands but not for those who belong to the Gothic scene and follow all the possible clichés (good looks, beauty and the beast vocals, heartbroken lyrics etc). No, I like the bands where the female singer is breaking grounds staying outside pre-defined molds that I am so bored of. After all, don’t we have a lot of cheesy female fronted bands who simply copying each other?

Of course, having a female singer does not mean a biased criticism of an album; in fact, I consider myself a tough reviewer when it comes to band like this, since - and for reasons I don’t know- I have expect more. In order to stop beating around the bush I should start talking about the brand new TOTEM album that I think it should be clear by now is a female fronted band. TOTEM’s debut release “Day Before the End” managed to draw my attention and I still listen the groovy headbanger “Thrash The South” where Weronika sings her lungs out. So, hearing the news about the next album got me pretty excited. First of all, I have to clear the mist and say from the very beginning that this is not a genuine Thrash album. There are distinct mainstream references and it is not a secret that the band is deeply influenced by ARCH ENEMY although sounds heavier than the Swedes and depends less on the lead guitars. Actually, TOTEM deliver heavy grooves that in times this can point towards SOULFLY’s direction without the tribal elements. The songs are pretty straightforward and most of them are characterized by a modern sound with down-tuned guitar and mostly shouting vocals setting a foot on the Metalcore territory.

“Stage One” opens the album, showing some SLIPKNOT-esque structures, with an in-your-face attitude and a huge collection of groovy breaks. There is more guitar action than in the case of the Iowa based band and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration if I’d throw SLAYER on the influences table mainly of their latest albums. Fortunately for me, the album is not single-sided (like most of the Metalcore albums are) and with the help of Weronika things get spiced up. She uses a mix of clean and shouting/growling vocals keeping a nice balance between melody and aggression making songs like “Cross-Fire” (nice guitar solo here), “Let's Play (Invisible Insanity)” (very good mid tempo break) or the impressive six minutes long “A Perfect Lie (She and I)”. It wouldn’t be too much if I mentioned the early MACHINE HEAD to describe TOTEM and to be honest I’d love if they’d pursuit this sound and leave aside most of the Metalcore elements.

As the final verdict I’d say that TOTEM have improved their sound and with the help of their singer are walking towards a more personal sound that is so hard to get especially in the Metalcore scene. I will stick to my last wish and hope that the band will work more on the melodic side without of course taking away the heaviness out of the equation. ---metalkaoz.com
