Alexandre Distel, 29 January 1933, Paris, France, d. 22 July 2004, Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer, France. The scion of a well-heeled showbusiness family, Distel’s mother was the sister of Ray Ventura, who, with his group Les Collégiens, was one of the top band leaders in France during the pre-war period. Distel studied piano at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud School and was a professional jazz guitarist at the age of 16, often sitting in with distinguished Americans visiting Parisian clubland. Distel was recognized as one of his country’s foremost jazz instrumentalists by the mid-50s. He played with the Martial Solal Trio and recorded with pianist Raymond Le Senechal, vibraphonist Sadi, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. He also gained publicity for his liaisons with Brigitte Bardot and beatnik icon Juliette Gréco, while becoming a businessman with interests in music publishing.

Having been a Frank Sinatra fan for many years, Distel started singing in the late 50s with the encouragement of the arranger Bill Byers. In 1959, his debut single ‘Scoubidou’ made the French hit parade. His marriage to skiing champion Francine Bréaud in 1963, and the birth of their son, Laurent, did not affect the growth of a following that had extended beyond France to North America, where he starred in his own television spectacular. He recorded a French-language version (with cover girl Johanna Shimus) of Frank Sinatra and Nancy Sinatra’s ‘Somethin’ Stupid’ in 1967. Distel’s prolific songwriting talent gave birth to such standards as ‘La Belle Vie’ aka ‘The Good Life’, but his biggest moment on disc remains ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head’. This Oscar-winning number from the movie Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, which outsold the B.J. Thomas original in the UK chart, peaked at number 10 in January 1970, making no less than three re-entries throughout that year. An attendant album sold well in Britain and the USA, and set Distel up as a top cabaret draw throughout the world.

The multi-lingual singer hosted many television and radio shows throughout the world, and also appeared in several movies. During the 80s he returned to guitar playing with a series of albums including Ma Premiere Guitare and Ma Guitare And All That Jazz. In 1985 he was involved in a car crash with soap opera star Chantal Nobel, an accident that resulted in the actress becoming a wheelchair-bound recluse. Distel’s popularity in his native country was affected by the scandal, but by the end of the decade he had managed to reassert his star status. In 1993, he co-starred with the television hostess and compère, Rosemarie Ford, on the UK tour of Golden Songs Of The Silver Screen. The same year he set up the 18-piece dance band, Les Collégiens, to record an album of jazz classics by his uncle Ray Ventura. In 1995, Distel and Les Collégiens recorded a set of new songs in the Ventura style. Two years later Distel was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur for his contribution to French music. In October 2000, he joined the London cast of the hit musical Chicago, playing the role of slippery lawyer Billy Flynn. Distel died after a long illness in July 2004. He had successfully battled thyroid and skin cancer in previous decades. --- oldies.com

Sacha-Alexandre DISTEL, plus connu sous le pseudo de Sacha DISTEL, est né à Paris le 29 janvier 1933 et mort au Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer le 22 juillet 2004.

L’entourage familier du jeune Sacha DISTEL, lui permettra de rapidement s’installer dans la musique. Son oncle qui n’est autre que Ray VENTURA, l’initie peu à peu au Jazz, et le fait ainsi passer du piano, à la guitare, et plaque alors ses premiers accord de Jazz avec un dénommé Henri SALVADOR, nous sommes alors en 1947, le jeune lycéen sait déjà que sa vie sera faite de musique.

Se révélant être un surdoué de la guitare grâce notamment aux très bons conseils d’Henri SALVADOR, Sacha DISTEL intégrera rapidement le groupe NOISE MAKERS et ce fut le début du succès.

Lors d’une soirée à l’Alhambra organisée par Ray VENTURA, le groupe de Sacha DISTEL est invité à jouer aux côtés de Dizzy GILLESPIE et de son orchestre, et découvrira alors un nouveau style musical: Le Be-Bop. Un style qui est comme une révélation pour le jeune Sacha DISTEL, qui souhaite que son groupe passe à ce registre, mais verra finalement la fin de son aventure avec eux, donnant alors naissance à deux groupes, donc deux rivalités: LES IRREDUCTIBLES DU NEW ORLEANS de Guy WORMSER et LES AFICIONADOS DU COOL JAZZ ET DU BE-BOP menés par Sacha DISTEL, un groupe pour lequel le chanteur s’entourera du saxophoniste Hubert DAMISCH, du bassiste Jean-Marie INGRAND, du pianiste Mimi PERRIN et du batteur Jean Louis VIALE. Une formation qui décrochera à la Nuit Du Jazz du COLISEUM prix du meilleur petit orchestre moderne

C’est à Saint-Germain-des-Prés que la carrière de Sacha DISTEL commencera réellement. Poussé par son Oncle Ray VENTURA, il s’investira clairement dans le Jazz, et fait ainsi ses débuts de chanteur en 1958 au casino d'Alger.

Sacha DISTEL devient rapidement un grand guitariste de jazz français reconnu et joue avec Stephane GRAPPELLI, Roger GUERIN, Maurice VANDER, ou bien encore avec Michel PORTAL. Cette réussite lui permet d’enchainer les enregistrements d’albums de Jazz, avec de nombreux succès comme "Scoubidou" "Garde ça pour toi" "Bye bye baby" "Les Mordus" "Les Crocodiles" ou bien encore "L'Orgueil" et d’assoir un peu plus une notoriété grandissante, et la télévision vient alors le chercher pour animer de 1963 à 1971 des émissions de variétés, et son fameux Sacha Show de MARITIE et Gilbert CARPENTIER, émission qui avait notamment pour auteurs Serge GAINSBOURG et Jean YANNE.

Dans les années 70 et 80 il se concentre sur la musique, et connait encore de très grands succès comme " Y en a qui font ça", "Le père de Sylvia", "Pour une nuit avec toi", "La vieille dame" "Toutes les mêmes", "Toute la pluie tombe sur moi", "Le Bateau blanc", et le public sera toujours au rendez vous.

Les années 90 seront celle du retrait de la vie musicale. Après les titres "Michael et Raïssa", "Mesquita", et "La Mer", Sacha DISTEL se fait très discret, décidant en 1993 de rendre hommage à de grands noms de la chanson avec l’album "Dédicaces". Invité régulièrement des émissions, il continue à chanter. Star internationale, Sacha DISTEL accepte de tenir le rôle principal dans la comédie musicale "Chicago" à Londres en 2001.

Il meurt à 71 ans le 22 juillet 2004 des suites d'un cancer de la peau. Sacha DISTEL repose dans la crypte familiale de la propriété de ses beaux-parents au Rayol-Canadel. --- melody.tv
