Sacha Distel (29 January 1933 – 22 July 2004), nephew of band leader Ray Ventura, was a French singer who had hits such as a cover version of the Academy Award winning “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” (originally recorded by B.J. Thomas) Frank & Nancy Sinatra’s Something Stupid and “Scoubidou”. He was born in Paris to At age 16, Distel became a professional jazz guitarist. Over his career he worked alongside Dizzy Gillespie and Tony Bennett and appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in the late 1950s after establishing himself as a French crooner.

Sacha Distel had a much publicized relationship with actress Brigitte Bardot but in 1963 he married skier Francine Bréaud. He reputedly broke off the relationship with Bardot after discovering her with another man. In the 1960s, he composed ‘La Belle Vie’, a tune that made its way across the Atlantic as ‘The Good Life’, and most famously performed by Tony Bennett. French lyrics were added in the 1970s and it became Distel’s signature tune. During the 1960s, he had his own variety show on French television.

During the 1970s, he became popular outside France, and once hosted the Miss World contest in London. In this decade, he spent more time in the UK than in France. Considered a Gallic heart throb in Britain he was a regular on British TV Distel remained reasonably popular in France in the 1980s and 1990s, including a new show named after his song ‘La Belle Vie’. ---last.fm

Sacha Alexandre Distel dit Sacha Distel est un guitariste de jazz, compositeur et chanteur français né à Paris, le 29 janvier 1933 et mort au Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer (près de Saint-Tropez) le 22 juillet 2004. Il est le neveu de Ray Ventura. Il commence par être guitariste de jazz. Il fait ses débuts de chanteur en 1958 au casino d’Alger. Après une idylle avec Brigitte Bardot, il épouse en 1963 la skieuse Francine Bréaud avec laquelle il aura deux fils.

Couronné en 1959 par le Grand Prix de l’académie Charles-Cros, il débute à l’écran avec « Les Mordus ». A partir de 1962, il commence à animer les émissions de variétés à la télévision, notamment les « Sacha show » de Maritie et Gilbert Carpentier.

Le 28 avril 1985 il est victime d’un accident de la route, dans la traversée du hameau de Maltaverne (commune de Tracy-sur-Loire, à proximité de Cosne-sur-Loire), à bord d’une Porsche avec Chantal Nobel, héroïne du feuilleton télé Châteauvallon. Chantal Nobel, grièvement blessée, en ressort handicapée à vie, lui-même est légèrement blessé et est condamné à un an de prison avec sursis pour blessures involontaires. Il a tenu le rôle principal dans la comédie musicale Chicago à Londres en 2001.

Il est décédé à 71 ans le 22 juillet 2004 des suites d’un cancer. Il repose dans la crypte familiale de la propriété de ses beaux-parents au Rayol-Canadel, près de Saint-Tropez. ---last.fm
