Karol Szymanowski – Violin Concerto No.1 Live(Tetzlaff) [2007]

Christian Tetzlaff - violin
St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
David Robertson - conductor

St. Louis, MO on December 09, 2007

Christian Tetzlaff is a very highly regarded musician for obvious reasons: he is a brilliant technician, he understands each of the many composers he performs from is extraordinary Bach works to 20th century pieces, and he has a tonal palette that extends form a very large sound to an almost eerily inaudible whisper. Perhaps he is not a media star yet, but music lovers who appreciate impeccable talent are offering him standing ovations whenever he appears.

This live recording of the Karol Szymanowski Violin Concerto No. 1, Op 35 is a treasure and is as fine a performance of this far too seldom heard work as any recorded. And this recording with the St Louis Symphony Orchestra under the fine conductor Dqvid Robertson reveals just why Tetzlaff is likely the best proponent of this work. There is much dialogue with the various sections of the orchestra (the movement emphasizing the interplay among the soloist and the piano, celesta, and harps seems from another planet!), and the five movement work intersperses three erotic Vivace movements with dreamy slow movements - each section clearly stimulated by initial thoughts from the violin. The work ends in a mysterious elusive manner that at once leaves the audience transfixed and puzzled. There is a solid communication between Tetzlaff and Robertson here, and if it is not on the same plane as that achieved with Eschenbach that is likely due to Tetzlaff's growing even more into the work as well as the brilliance of the orchestral playing. ---Grady Harp, amazon.com
