The vocal ensemble The Sound And The Fury has now reached its sixth CD release, and has quickly made a name for itself as a special ensemble. It could hardly be otherwise, with the big names that make up the ensemble. Characteristic for The Sound And The Fury is the warm and relaxed ensemble sound. The high recording quality is also a constant, so that - like the undersigned - you can only realize late that it is almost always live recordings. This only becomes apparent when you hear irregularities here and there, especially in the intonation. Some bets are simply false, and at such moments you wonder why studio recordings have not been used, or a montage of multiple live recordings. Now the moments of impurity disturb anyway, which is a shame, because the performances are absolutely beautiful. On this double CD we hear two never-before-recorded masses by Obrecht, that megalomaniac composer from the fifteenth century. The remarkable length of these two masses even makes it impossible to fit on one CD. ---www.muziekweb.nl
An amazing display of expressivity achieved through daring 'prolations' and 'colorations'! There are at least half a dozen parody masses based on the chanson Fortuna Desperata, but Obrecht's is by far the most likely to keep the most secular audiences riveted to the music. ---avxhm.se
