Simon Preston, regarded by many as one of the best organists in the world today, gives us a wonderful program in this recording featuring works by Luis Vierne (1870 - 1937) and Charles-Marie Widor (1844 - 1937). The organ is located at Westminster Abbey in London England. The program opens with the beautiful `Carillon de Westminster' composed by Luis Vierne. Its' melody is that of the Westminster chimes one might hear in old clocks and is very lovely indeed. Charles-Marie Widor Symphony No. 5 is very pleasing with strong melodies that really get stuck in the noggin! This recording should dispel the apparent common belief that organ music must be thunderously loud to be good, as the works featured here are softer but feature full robust crescendos. This CD was originally released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1984 and is a full digital (DDD) recording, but appears to have been re-issued by the label ArkivMusic. I have some ArkivMusic releases and they are of excellent quality. --- Blind man Wayne, amazon.com
