Hong Hei-Kyung (born July 4, 1959 in Gangwon, South Korea) is a South Korean-American operatic lyric soprano.
Hong studied at Yea Won Music School in Seoul and through scholarships went to the United States alone at age 15 to study at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and its American Opera Center. While at Juilliard, she appeared in a number of productions with the American Opera Center. At the Juilliard School of Music she also participated in the master classes of Tito Gobbi, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Walter Legge, and Gerard Souzay. She later studied voice privately with Shirlee Emmons. In addition, she was one of four young singers invited to attend Herbert von Karajan's opera classes at the 1983 Salzburg Festival. Like many non-Italian and non-German singers, she has not been tied to operas of specific languages; her repertoire includes Italian(Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti), German(Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner) and French(Bizet, Gounod, Offenbach). But Mozart possesses the most important part in her repertoire; beside three roles in Le Nozze di Figaro - Countess Almaviva(29 performances), Susanna(10 performances) and Barbarina(8 performances), she has sung Zerlina in Don Giovanni(29 performance), Despina in Così Fan Tutte(14 performances), Servilia in La Clemenza di Tito(11 performances), Pamina in Die Zauberflöte(9 performances), and Ilia in Idomeneo(9 performances). Among the roles she has sung(but not at the Met), there are the title role of Massenet's Manon, Musetta in La Bohème, Tatyana in Eugene Onegin, and Leila in Les Pêcheurs de Perles.
Her orchestral repertoire is as broad as her operatic experience. She has sung Bach with Trevor Pinnock and the Montreal Symphony, and the late conductor and composer Giuseppe Sinopoli wrote his Lou Salome Suite for her, which they premiered together with the New York Philharmonic. She has appeared with the Boston Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and many others under conductors such as Charles Dutoit, Mariss Jansons, Seiji Ozawa, André Previn, and Lorin Maazel, with whom she sang the Final Scene from Strauss' Daphne for the Bayerische Rundfunk.
Jennifer Larmore (born June 21, 1958 in Atlanta, Georgia) is an American mezzo-soprano opera singer, noted for coloratura and bel canto.
Larmore attended Westminster Choir College in New Jersey and trained with John Bullock and Regina Resnik. She made her professional debut in 1986, at Opéra de Nice in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito. In 1988, she sang Rosina in Rossini's The Barber of Seville (Jérôme Savary production in Strasbourg) and now calls it her signature role. Larmore has since sung many leading roles in Europe's greatest opera houses, as well as making her Carnegie Hall debut as Romeo (Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi) in 1994 and her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1995. Her repertoire includes Mahler, Schoenberg, Mozart, de Falla, Debussy, Berlioz and Barber. She appeared as Gertrude in the Met's Hamlet in 2010.
Larmore has won the Richard Tucker Award and a Grammophon Best Baroque Opera award for singing Giulio Cesare on Harmonia Mundi. She has won seven Grammy Award nominations and sang at the 1996 Summer Olympics closing ceremony in Atlanta. Larmore also hosts a satellite radio show called Backstage With Jennifer Larmore. She received knighthood (Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) from the French Government in 2002. In addition to Il barbiere di Siviglia, Larmore has recorded leading roles in Carmen, Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra, La Cenerentola, L'italiana in Algeri, Bianca e Falliero, Giulio Cesare, La Sofonisba, and I Capuleti e i Montecchi. She has also appeared in supporting roles in Orphée et Eurydice, Maria Stuarda, Francesca di Foix, Elvida, Adelaide di Borgogna, and Alessandro nelle Indie.
