Wilson returned to small groups and then a trio as his last sessions for Columbia. Still not quite up to the impeccable calibre of the earlier dates, but a 1940 session with Bill Coleman and Benny Morton in the front line is fine, and Wilson's 1941 solos-with-rhythm maintain his own fierce standards.

A session with Emmet Berry, Benny Morton and Jimmy Hamilton provide two smoky Lena Horne songs. There are great moments to savour in the eight quintet tracks from dec 44 - jan 45, which feature Charlie Shavers, Red Norvo and Maxine Sullivan, the latter on "Every time we say goodbye" and "This Heart of Mine".

The final date on CD 9 includes Clayton and Webster for four excellent titles - two on this CD and two on CD 10. The last disc has essentially the same content as the Classics 997 - "TW 1946". It encompasses piano solo pieces and two group sessions; the first being the TW Octet with Clayton, Byas and Sarah Vaughan in wonderful versions of "Penthouse Serenade" and "Don't Worry 'Bout Me". The last four tracks of this series includes the quartet with a stupendous Charlie Ventura, Remo Palmieri and Billy Taylor; and Sarah Vaughan on the melancholic "Time after Time" and "September Song" ---Penguin Guide
