The album you are holding was recorded in 2003 and its origins go back to a couple of days in July we spent together recording the soundtrack for the TV Theater show (Parasite, directed by Marcin Wrona). As long-time devoted fans of Andrzej Przybielski's music, after having collaborated with him for a number of years, we remain constantly impressed by his working methods and the way he views life through the prism of improvisation. At the same time, we believe his music has never been fully presented. That is why we dared produce this disk and be his accompanying musicians during the recording sessions. Most of the music recorded here has been made with no previous rehearsals, preparations or agreements, which reflects Andrzej's working methodology as well as his firm conviction that real music does not require declarations and if it is to come into being, it wilt do so without them - hence the comments made ad hoc in the studio right before recording a given track. In order to underline the rawness of this music we decided to record it using only three microphones, so that each instrument could fill the same portion of space and therefore be equally important as the other two. ---Marcin & Bartlomiej Brat Oles, nottwo.com

Andrzej Przybielski was one of those truly underrated musicians that never got even close to the word "recognized" in the wider public. For probably those outside Poland and parts of Europe, the name Andrzej Przybielski will unfortunately mean nothing. But, he is revered in his homeland and his passing this February will touch the artistic community in Poland for years to come. Fellow Polish trumpeter, Tomasz Stanko has also acknowledged Przybieslski's legendary status. Przybielski's playing might be more fierce and adventurous than Stanko. He could turn phrases like Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard or Don Cherry. His loss is the entire jazz community's loss but hopefully in this digital age his legend can grow and be cemented.

Andrzej Przybielski, while having a pretty lengthy catalog, didn't record with any great frequency. Only in the last decade did it seem like he was really recording at a decent pace. He began playing more in the avant garde style in the 60s and 70s. As he got older his playing became more statesman-like but still had a distinctive bit to it. In the last few years he paired up with Europe's most prolific rhythm sections, the Oles Brothers, and formed a trio that recorded two albums under Przybielski's name, and two under the Oles Brothers direction as Custom Trio.

Abstract (Not Two Records, 2005) is a perfect introduction to Przybielski style. Abstract features moments of hard bop mixed with free jazz that form a beautiful and crisp document for a group with evolving ideas. You could compare the youthful injection from the Oles Brothers to that of the Marcin Wasilewski Trio for Tomasz Stanko. The energy featured on "Ride" forces the group into exchanges that are both explosive and beautiful. Przybielski and Bartlomiej demonstrate a brilliant piece of interplay midway through "Ride" that will undoubtedly have you stunned. The classic "Afro Blue" also gets a deep rendering which is drastically different from both the Mongo Santamaria original and the more well-known John Coltrane version. The trio really deconstruct this piece with a great deal of improvisation and post-bop vision. Elsewhere, "Epitafium dla Jacka" illustrates a more relaxed nature to Przybielski's playing that sets him alongside Miles Davis or even Clifford Brown. ---Stephan Moore, polish-jazz.blogspot.com

Trzech instrumentalistów. Co tu dużo kryć - wybitnych. I tak rzadkie nagranie Andrzeja Przybielskiego. Outsidera polskiej sceny jazzowej. Trębacza, który w dalszym ciągu traktowany jest jako ikona polskiej awangardy jazzowej. I pewnie nią jest. Mimo faktu, że muzyka którą gra sięga głęboko już w przeszłość.

Bardzo głęboko. Don Cherry uber alles. Wzór? Naśladownictwo? Wzór - jak najbardziej, naśladownictwo - daleki jestem od takich skojarzeń, po którymś z rzędu przesłuchaniu tej płyty. Duch Cherry'ego jest jednak obecny. Jest wszechobecny. Surowe brzmienia instrumentów. Surowa muzyka z pozostawionymi wstawkami Przybiełki. Nuci, instruuje, mówi pomiędzy utworami. Przyznam, że zabieg to przedni. Daje pojęcie o realizowaniu płyty. O jej nagrywaniu. Autentyk. Nie wiem, nie potrafię powiedzieć, czy to właśnie dzięki, czy też przez te "wstawki" nagranie nabrało takiego autentyzmu, jednak słuchając go nie mogę oprzeć się wrażeniu, że muzyka tu zawarta płynie głęboko z serca, czy też serc muzyków.

Dodatkowo wrażenie to wzmacnia surowość nagrania. Przypomina mi realizacje C.I.M.P. To wielka zaleta. Pochwała, bowiem uważam, że są to jedne z lepiej zrealizowanych płyt z muzyką improwizowaną. Być może punktowe ulokowanie instrumentów dla niektórych słuchaczy będzie wadą tej realizacji. Może się nie podobać, bo do czego innego jesteśmy zwykle przyzwyczajeni. Niemniej jednak - cokolwiek by nie powiedzieć, siląc się nawet na krytyczne słowa - ma to swój urok. Urok autentyzmu. Muzycznie, kompozycyjnie otrzymujemy utwory, które bardziej przypominają szkice kompozycji niż w pełni "dorosłe" utwory. Chwila. Przecież niemal za wyjątkiem fragmentu "Cherry", są to utwory zagrane niejako ad hoc. Jedynie z podanym tematem, a potem muzycy oddają się nieskrępowanej improwizacji. Jeszcze raz autentycznie.

Gorąco polecam zapoznanie się z tymi jednie 40 minutami muzyki (włączywszy "instrukcje" Przybiełki). Dawno nie słyszałem polskiego, a nawet pochodzącego spoza naszego kraju, nagrania które dawałoby tyle przyjemności niemal uczestniczenia w procesie nagrywania. Nie będąc realizacją koncertową przenosi niemal do studia nagraniowego. Daje wrażenie bezpośredniego obcowania z muzykami. A że muzyka, dla wszystkich sympatyków Cherry'ego, Colemana i ich następców będzie miodem na uszy nie mam wątpliwości. ---Paweł Baranowski, ebay.com
