A re-connection with a musical icon or tradition – it is often the way something new, maybe even game-changing emerges. That was the idea in curator/ producer’s Siggi Loch’s mind when he suggested to Magnus Lindgren that he might look at re-tracing the footsteps of Herbie Mann. “Stockholm Underground” is a homage to the one of the greats of the jazz flute, and to his legendary 1969 album “Memphis Underground”, listed by Rolling Stone in 2013 in the “100 Best Jazz Albums” of all time.The key figure in this project is evidently Magnus Lindgren, a stalwart of the Stockholm jazz scene, and known in the role he has had for many years, as a member of the Nils Landgren Funk Unit. Tytuł nagranego w Sztokholmie albumu jest nawiązaniem do legendarnej płyty Herbiego Manna "Memphis Underground" z 1969 roku. Znany z albumów Wolfganga Haffnera, Torstena Goodsa, Rigmor Gustafsson oraz formacji Nils Landgren Funk Unit, szwedzki muzyk Magnus Lindgren proponuje płytę, na której wiodącym instrumentem jest flet. Sięgnięcie po ten instrument przez, znanego dotąd głównie jako saksofonista Lindgrena, to jednoznaczny hołd dla uznawanego za pioniera world music, Manna zmarłego w 2003 roku.

Od początku kariery Lindgrena fascynuje fuzja muzyki świata z formami jazzowymi. Warto wspomnieć, że artysta uznany kilka lat temu w Szwecji jazzowym muzykiem numer 1, już w roku 2009 opublikował bardzo ciepło przyjęty na świecie album "Batucada Jazz", nagrany w Ameryce Południowej z udziałem brazylijskich muzyków.

W nagraniu płyty "Stockholm Underground" Lindgrena wspomogli zaprzyjaźnieni artyści, tacy jak: pianista Daniel Karlsson, grający na gitarze basowej Lars Danielsson, czy pochodzący z Nowego Jorku bluesowo-folkowy gitarzysta Eric Bibb i nazywana przez krytyków "Białą Królową Soulu XXI wieku" wokalistka Ida Sand. W programie płyty poza premierowymi kompozycjami, znajdziemy pochodzący ze wspomnianej wcześniej historycznej płyty Herbiego Manna utwór "Chain Of Fools", oraz stylowo opracowany, słynny przebój Procol Harum: "A Whiter Shade Of Pale".

Lindgrenowi udało się zgromadzić skład idealnie odczytujący jego dźwiękowe intencje. Osiągnięte przez zespół doskonałych instrumentalistów brzmienie oraz specyfika poszczególnych utworów, trafnie precyzuje styl Herbiego Manna, przefiltrowany przez estetykę skandynawskiego jazzu.
