Take a trip back in musical time with Miss Rae & The Midnight Ramblers, as their vintage sound evokes Fiery Blues and Southern Soul. A “closet singer”, she was a shy child who absorbed her mother’s record collection of Billie Holiday, Howlin’ Wolf and Big Mama Thornton; while being raised around Blues Jams at the Sidetrack Café in Edmonton. At the ripe age of 14, she won a scholarship to partake in Rachelle Van Zanten’s Rocker Girl Camp, which exposed her to successful women in the music industry. Before belting behind the microphone, Cheyenne Rae was training in Winnipeg as a music photographer and filmmaker.

To overcome her shyness, Cheyenne started singing in public after moving to Winnipeg alone at the age of 16. Her vocal lessons took place onstage at the Sunday Night Blues Jams hosted by Big Dave McLean. On a whim, she wrote/filmed an acapella song entitled “Clearwater” for the Harvest Moon Music Festival, and the short video won her First Place which led to her performing on their main stage for a thousand listeners – after that experience Miss Rae was born. She began penning her own songs, and quickly assembled The Midnight Ramblers. At age 21, Miss Rae produced her band’s debut album, Big Boned Woman (music co-written with Vince Andrushko), released in August 2013. Miss Rae had found her voice as a Blues front-woman, blossoming into a powerhouse who sings as though every performance is her last. A woman of mixed ancestry, Miss Rae’s background consists of Métis, African & German heritage.

For nearly two years, Miss Rae lived in Paris, France: singing in Cafés, Clubs & Métro stations. Working with Jeff Loiselet, the duo headlined an evening for the 2015 Jazz on Seine Festival, sponsored by Paris Jazz Club. Returning to her hometown of Edmonton in 2016, she selected local experienced players to reprise a new line-up of The Midnight Ramblers. Upon receiving the 2017 Cultural Diversity Grant from the Edmonton Arts Council, Miss Rae collaborated with Warren Chan to write music for her sophomore album. During the span of 3 days, the 7 piece ensemble recorded live-off-the-floor onto analogue, with co-producer Barry Allen at Homestead Recorders. Wild Rose was released in June of 2018. Miss Rae’s highlights in Edmonton include: a featured set for ‘Canada 150’ at The Works Festival, headlining Edmonton’s 7th International Beer Festival, playing the 1st Annual Edmonton Winter Blues Festival and the Art Gallery of Alberta’s VIBE soirée.

An old soul at 27, Miss Rae wrote Wild Rose to express content related to Female Empowerment, while touching upon controversial issues such as: the Sixties Scoop (“Serpent’s Tongue”), and Black Segregation (“Promised Land”). “Time’s Up Now” focuses on the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women of Canada, reaching #1 on the Top 40 Indigenous Music Countdown Charts. ---missraemusic.com
