"Maxwell Street Jimmy" Davis, 70, a blues singer and guitarist, was a street performer on Maxwell Street since the 1960s and a recording artist.

A resident of Chicago's Near West Side, he died Dec. 28, 1995 on the way to see his doctor.

Early last year, a Tribune review of his latest recording on the "Chicago Blues Session Vol. II" album called him "an underused throwback to the rough-hewn acoustic Mississippi delta sound that spawned Chicago Blues as we know it." The review contrasted his style with "this era of stringently overproduced blues records."

During the 1960s, he acquired the name "Maxwell Street Jimmy" while performing on the sidewalk in front of the Knotty Pine Grill, which he owned. He stopped performing for part of the 1970s but returned to playing on summer weekends in the 1980s and 1990s.

His debut record was on the Elektra label in 1965. He followed with recordings on Testament and Takoma in the U.S. and Sonet and Flywright in Europe.

"His gleeful and fun-loving personality contrasted with the brooding vocals and intense guitar work of his brand of Delta blues," said Michael Frank, president of Earwig Music Co.

He was a native of Tippo, Miss., and danced with the Silas Green and Rabbit Foot traveling minstrel shows as a teen.

He performed at the Handzame Blues Festival in Belgium and the Chicago Blues Festival. ---Kenan Heise, chicagotribune.com
