Man, sometimes it's like pulling eye teeth to dig up information on some of these late, great but obscure bluesmen. The website of Austrian blues label Wolf Records says that pianist Alabama Red was born in 1927 in Panola, Alabama and moved to Chicago in the 1940s. Self-taught on guitar and piano, Red sang in churches before forming his own band on the Windy City's South side, performing blues and gospel tunes at such high profile events as the Chicago Blues Festival before dying in 2006, but not before passing along a cassette tape of songs to Wolf. The label is releasing an identical album titled Windy City Blues, so maybe Ghetto Blues is just a U.S. version; either way, Alabama Red's signature song "Goin' Home For Christmas" is here, along with the songs "Ghetto Blues" and "Windy City Blues." --- blues.about.com
