Eighteenth-century French composer Bernard Dupuy's oratorio-like composition on the birth of Christ, Au milieu de la nuit combines French grace and Italian virtuosity into a work of great expressive power. His motet Cantate Domino Canticum Novum (Psalm 97) belongs to the great tradition of the grands motets of the Versailles school, in which the text is broken down into several verses that alternate arias, duets, and large choruses. In the Magnificat in F, the solo soprano voice rings out of both small and large choruses to glorify the Mother of God. --- daedalusbooks.com
