It has supposedly been said by Schumann that Requiems are "written for one's self". Schumann wrote his Requiem in 1849. His Requiem für Mignon is composed to Goethe`s Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, the piece is a literary masque which Schumann puts on to create a unification of words and music. It was composed for the centenary of Goethe's birth.
