One of the great ironies of the music business is that Decca chose BP and the Trems over The Beatles in January 1962 thinking they would be more commercial. They had to wait until July 1963 to score their first hit- and it turned out to be a cover of 'Twist and Shout', cashing in on the success of The Beatles rendition of that song on their first album.
To be fair, the Tremeloes were good musicians, Brian Poole was a competent singer and the group went on to have several more hits, though all were covers of American songs. By the end of 1965 they were done, though the Tremeloes re-appeared without Poole in 1967 for a second, and more successful run.
This album collects all the hits with Poole as the lead singer, together with some B-sides and some extra tracks which, I have to say, are basically filler. When a group is struggling to fill a single-disc 'best of' collection, you know their run has been a brief one. Still, it was good while it lasted and anyone who collects music of this period surely has to have a CD of the band whom Decca chose instead of The Beatles. ---John D. Muir, amazon.com
