In Extremo are the masters of medieval metal from Germany. The band was formed in 1995 and in 2016 In Extremo comes to us with their eleventh full-length album „Quid pro quo”. The album is fast dynamic fresh powerful jocund and jaunty. As always, besides typical for metal instruments, it is full of good medieval tones performed by bagpipes, harp, shawm, hurdy gurdy, nyckelharpa and cister.

Magnificent vocal of Michael Robert Rhein vel. Das Letzte Einhorn (eng. The Last Unicorn) is a key for succes of this album. Very distinctive slightly hoarse voice perfect match to archaic arrangements.

„Quid pro quo” contains also track „Чёрный ворон” (eng. Black Crow), which is Cossack Russian folk song. It tells the story of a warrior fight to the death, which takes the form of a black crow. The lyrics are beautiful and melody is moving touching and sometimes with stamping.

Every track on that album is emotional, which is characteristic for In Extremo. Even on harder songs (like „Glück auf Erden”) you can find a lot of melodious harmonic tones. Listener can really feel like in the medieval ages. Without clean water, electricity and other inventions of civilization  but with amazing music and unrepeatable unique atmosphere, which you can experience only at that time. It’s worth of it.

And in some tracks (for example „Flaschenteufel”) you can hear even some east accretions in rythm and sound of it. The effect is stunning.

Medieval metal at its best… Just In Extremo, which is not older even by day from 1995 and gives us consistently attractive sound. As good as it gets. --- folkmetalmagazine.com
