During his early-morning press review on an October day in 2012, the following report caught Dr. Pymonte’s eye: “Spectacular art heist in Rotterdam: seven master pieces were stolen – among them also paintings from Picasso, Monet and Matisse. The value of the stolen paintings is inestimable, as it is close to impossible to purchase them on the free market.” With this report it became clear to the harpist, dulcimer player and bagpiper what the new album of his band In Extremo must be called: “Kunstraub” (“Art Heist”).

His fascination for these sophisticated crooks also inspired him to write the lyrics to the song “Kunstraub” (“Art Heist”). “A coup like this requires wits and refinement”, he calls out, “this was not done by 20 year old morons. These must be true art experts, rascals with taste!” Drifters, hangdogs and rogues have always been of special interest to these modern minstrels. “Lebemann” (“Bon Viveur”) is yet another song on this album, written to memorialize exactly these outsiders. “A “bon vivieur” is the kind of guy, that doesn’t have a penny in his pocket and still travels the world. His bills are paid by the ladies” vocalist Micha Rhein aka Das Letzte Einhorn (“The Last Unicorn”) laughs.

Some of the songs have surprisingly heavy elements, pointing in the direction of thrash metal. Percussionist Specki demonstrates that he’s a master at playing the double bass drum and Basti, the guitarist, proves his passion for hard and heavy riffs in the style of Prong and Helmet. Rough sections in the songs are switched off by melodic folk – and medieval parts. This is where the two bagpipers Marco Zorzytzky (aka Flex der Biegsame) and Boris “Yellow“ Pfeiffer come in, blowing out tunes in the form of pure In-Ex- ecstasy. Of course, on top of all that, we have the sing along hymns such as “Alles schon gesehen“ (“Seen It All Already”) and “Himmel und Hölle“ (“Heaven and Hell”), that instantly invite their fans and listeners to chant along. ---rockhal.lu
