This is the follow-up by Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman to their 1999 release 'Jabberwocky', but in truth this should be seen as the sequel to Jeff Wayne's 'War Of The Worlds'. Instead of Richard Burton we have Robert Powell as narrator, and he has an awesome presence and majesty that this album deserves. I have been playing this a lot in the car and Sara (who normally turns all of my CDs off as a matter of course) has been listening to it and confessed in a moment of weakness that it is a good album. If they can get through to Sara then this obviously has appeal for a much larger market than many of the Verglas releases.

With different singers taking on roles (the usual suspects include Bob Catley, Tracy Hitchings and Ian 'Moon' Gould as well as others such as Ashley Holt from the Rick Wakeman Band), the idea behind the album is to turn the story into a concept album and to my ears they succeed brilliantly. While there is plenty of help on the musical front (Karl Groom, Peter Banks, John Jowitt, Peter Gee to name just a few), there are a lot of keyboards on the album which give it an orchestral feel, particularly in the long linking passages.

However, the songs themselves are often full of passion and dynamics, such as the exciting "The Curse Of The Baskervilles". I have known Clive for many years and I think I have heard just about all that he has released in all of his guises, and can say honestly that this is the finest work with which he has been associated. The biggest problem he now has is getting this album out to those who need to hear it, because properly marketed this could be a huge commercial success. Pamiętacie "Jabberwocky"? Miła, art-rockowa produkcja pachnąca neopierogami ze stajni Nolan & Wakeman. Niezwykle przyjemnie słuchało się historii o walce z potworem... Płytka zebrała przychylne recenzje. Sądzę, że podobnie będzie z "Psem Baskerwillów" - najnowszą produkcją płodnego nad wyraz Clive`a i nie mniej sławnego odeń Oliviera. Przykrytej ciekawą, ale w pewien sposób - wybaczcie to sformułowanie, kiczowatą - okładką autorstwa Petera Pracownika.

Charakterystyczny styl poprzedniej produkcji dwóch Panów jest bardzo odczuwalny podczas słuchania "Hound of the Baskervilles". Oczywiście, dominują wszelkiego rodzaju klawisze. Słychać jednak i flet (pogrywa na nim znana zapewne wielu z Was... Ewa Albering :), Arjena Lucassena gitarę elektryczną, basy Piotrusiów: Gee i Jowitta... Komplet muzyków uzupełniają: znany z wcześniejszej pracy z Nolanem - Karl Groom i Peter Banks oraz śliczna (polecam zdjęcie we wkładce :) Jo Greenland na skrzypcach i Tony Fernandez na bębnach. Wokalizy tworzą między innymi Tracy Hitchgins, Michelle Young, Ashley Holt, Robert Powell i Bob Catley z Magnum. Wszystkim tym artystom udało się zbudować miły, chwilami w tak znajomy sposób pompatyczny i radosny, kiedy indziej zaś ponury i mroczny nastrój.

Płyta, jak nietrudno zauważyć, opowiada Conan-Doyle`owską historię psa Baskerwillów - tragiczną i frapującą od początku do końca. Każdy, komu znana jest powieść mistrza z przyjemnością będzie wsłuchiwał się w rozbudowaną warstwę tekstową płyty. Co ciekawe, bardzo silny nacisk położono na... narrację. Nie spodziewajmy się jednak po tekstach czegoś specjalnie wysublimowanego - ot, jeszcze jedna historyjka. Zdecydowanie, więcej uwagi poświęcić należy stronie instrumentalnej - zwłaszcza, jeżeli chodzi o utwory takie jak Three Broken Threads czy Shadows of Fate. Przyznać zresztą należy, że - jak i przy "Jabberwocky" - najsilniejszy bodziec do ewentaulnego zakupu wydawnictwa stanowić powinna właśnie praca muzyków. Grają oni doprawy perfekcyjnie; niewiele w ostatnim czasie słyszałem dzieł nagranych z taką dbałością o szczegóły i wysmakowaniem. Cóż, co firma, to firma...

Finalizując, zdecydowanie polecam. Nie spodziewajcie się czegoś uderzającego, powalającego na kolana czy urzekającego szczególnie - oryginalność i progresywne podejście nie są głównymi cechami "Psa Baskerwillów" - ale jest to kilkadziesiąt minut dobrej, ciekawej i smakowicie podanej muzyki spod szlachetnego szyldu. ---Druid, artrock.pl
