Joe Lynn Turner has established himself as a world renowned vocalist. His career has taken him from his his native New Jersey band “Fandango” to play with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore band Rainbow and again worked with Blackmore on the Deep Purple record, “Slaves and Masters.” He joined Yngwie Malmsteen to record the studio album “Odyssey,” and tour in 1988 and 1989. Joe has worked with Billy Joel, Cher, Michael Bolton, John Waite and many other prominent artist. Through all this he has also had time for a successful solo career and as of late has collaborated with the legendary vocalist and bassist Glenn Hughes on two CD releases.

Taking time out for himself again, Joe delivers his latest solo effort simply titled, "JLT." The CD features guitarist Al Pitrelli (Megadeth, Savatage, Alice Cooper, Trans Siberian Orchestra) and drummer John O’Reilly (Rainbow, Blue Oyster Cult).

The CD is a return to a more traditional hard rock sound, featuring layered keyboards and guitars. It certainly has a 80s vibe to the overall sound, along with Joe's raspy vocals. The CD starts out on a fast pace until the fourth track, "Love Don't Live Here," which is an above average ballad that has a solid beat and good lyrical content. From there the continuity of the CD flucuates from the uptempo pace of the first three tracks to mid tempo, then to fast tempo on "Drivin' With My Eyes Closed" and "Hit the Switch" and finishing off the CD with "The Reprise" which has a slow grinding tempo.

The track "Excess," has good vocal melody along with a great balance between electric and acoustic guitars. "Let's Go" has a funky hard rock groove and is a fun upbeat song. My favorite track on the CD is "Fantasize," which reminds me of a Aldo Nova tune. "Fantasize" really harkens back to the 80s, the song features a strong chorus and a killer guitar riff. ---hardrockhaven.net
