Walknut is a two-piece atmospheric black metal band from Russia. Their two members Ravnaskrik and Stringsskald are somewhat veterans of the genre, having worked with several black metal bands, most notably Forest. That said, they have only produced one full length album together, the excellent Graveforests and Their Shadows.

Graveforests and Their Shadows' sound is based on the repetition of riffs (note: outrageously catchy riffs for a black metal album) and blast beats, which combines with the use of heavy distortions to cause a droning out effect and establish a vastly bleak atmosphere. Juxtaposed with this atmosphere is aggression, created by the riffs and the agonizing vocals coming in from the distance. Walknut thus strikes a perfect balance between rawness and atmosphere, and it is this balance that defines Graveforests and Their Shadows's brilliance.
