Kill 'Em All is the debut album by the American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on July 25, 1983 through Megaforce Records. The album was recorded in only 2 weeks, between May 10 and May 27, on a small budget. Since its release, it has been certified 3x platinum by the RIAA, having sold over 3,000,000 copies in the U.S. alone. Metal Up Your Ass was the working title of the album. Released in 1983, the album's release set the band on the path to "world domination," as drummer Lars Ulrich would put it in the following year. The album is acclaimed for combining the rawness of speed metal and punk with the technicality and sharpness of New Wave of British Heavy Metal influences: Diamond Head, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden. It is one of the most influential thrash metal albums ever.

The band initially planned to title the album Metal Up Your Ass with the cover featuring a toilet bowl with a hand clutching a dagger emerging from it. However, Megaforce urged them to change this, and they agreed, switching to Kill 'Em All. This time the cover featured the shadow of a hand letting go of a bloodied hammer. Cliff Burton is credited with coming up with the name Kill 'Em All (referring to timid record distributors) as a response to the whole situation. Even though the original title was unused, the band did later release a "Metal Up Your Ass" t-shirt with the proposed artwork. A live bootleg recording of a 1982 performance is in existence, titled "Metal Up Your Ass (Live)", and includes the originally intended cover artwork.

Original pressings of the album came with an inner sleeve that included pictures and lyrics as well as a silver label on the vinyl. Subsequent pressings had a blank white sleeve and standard album label. The 1988 re-release re-introduced the lyrics and photos. The original release can be distinguished by the words "Bang Thy Head That Doesn't Bang" at the bottom of the back cover. This was dropped from the re-release.

Zespół podpisał kontrakt z tą wytwórnią po zagraniu paru koncertów na Wschodnim Wybrzeżu USA, które zorganizował jej założyciel, Jon Zazula, po usłyszeniu dema grupy, No Life 'Til Leather.

W ocenie krytyków, album jest klasyką gatunku oraz przyczynił się do powstania thrash metalu, a James Hetfield swoją grą na albumie ustanowił nowe standardy siły, precyzji i wytrzymałości. Kill 'Em All został sklasyfikowany przez personel serwisu Metal-Rules.com na 20. miejscu wśród 100 Najlepszych Albumów Heavymetalowych. Jest to jedyny album Metalliki którego współkompozytorem nie jest Kirk Hammett oraz jeden z dwóch albumów (innym jest Death Magnetic z 2008 r.) niewyprodukowanych przez członków zespołu. W samych Stanach Zjednoczonych album sprzedał się w sumie w 3 milionach egzemplarzy.

Kill 'Em All został wydany 25 lipca 1983 przez wytwórnię Megaforce i spowodował "prawdziwe narodziny thrashu," zaś "dziś uznawany jest za klasykę." Według recenzenta, Steve'a Hueya z Allmusic, na albumie, "Metallica zjednoczyła powikłane riffowanie takich zespołów Nowej Fali Brytyjskiego Heavy Metalu jak Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, czy Diamond Head z szybkością Motörhead i hardcore'owego punku. Wysoce techniczny styl grania na gitarze rytmicznej Jamesa Hetfielda napędza większość albumu, ustanawiając nowe standardy siły, precyzji, i wytrzymałości," a "reszta zespołu jest równie wprawiona, grając ze ściśle kontrolowaną furią nawet w najbardziej absurdalnie szybkich tempach." Huey podsumował album następująco: "Przerażający, strasznie inspirujący i absolutnie bezlitosny, Kill 'Em All jest szczerze niszczycielską energią, dokonaną z powodującymi opadanie szczęki poziomami naukowej precyzji."

Recenzent magazynu Teraz Rock, Igor Stefanowicz, następująco określa styl w jakim zespół gra na albumie: "Szybkie, dość skomplikowane, precyzyjnie grane riffy, zresztą dość często się zmieniające, podobnie jak tempa. Wielka inwencja rytmiczna, sporo akcentów, przełomów aranżacyjnych, wirtuozerskie solówki grane z niewiarygodną prędkością. A przy tym całym zamieszaniu kompozycje z Kill 'Em All nadal są piosenkami – z melodią, z dramaturgią, z refrenami. Cholernie szczere, naładowane pięknie brzydką energią."
