Riding high on the success of his Top Five smash hit album Dance with Me (2009) and two straight Canadian Country Music Association Awards for Male Artist of the Year, Johnny Reid closed the year with his first holiday album, Christmas. It's a straightforward holiday effort, including plenty of Christmas favorites along with a couple original songs co-written by Reid himself. The Christmas favorites include "Silent Night," "Jingle Bell Rock," "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "The Little Drummer Boy," and five others. "Waiting for Christmas to Come" and "Christmas Time Again" are the two originals co-written with Thom Hardwell and Brent Maher, respectively. "Waiting for Christmas to Come" is a slow song that's wistful and sincere. "Christmas Time Again" is more fun, a rocking song driven by piano, guitar, and a catchy chorus. Both are good songs. There are lots of other rocking highlights on Christmas, including "Jingle Bell Rock," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Blue Christmas," and "Run Run Rudolph." The latter song, originally popularized by Chuck Berry, is a real delight. Ever since making his label debut on Open Road Recordings with the breakout album Born to Roll (2005), Reid has been on a tear with Top Ten hits including "Missing an Angel," "Time Flies," "Darlin'," "Out of the Blue," "A Woman Like You," "Dance with Me," and "Old Flame." Though Christmas doesn't include any material on a par with these hits and often feels effortless in its straightforward approach, it's nevertheless a worthwhile addition to Reid's catalog. He puts in a fine performance, singing the songs with spirit and rocking out more than one expects on a holiday album like this. ---Jason Birchmeier, AllMusic Review
