14. June 1958 Monaco, The Sporting Club Benefit for the United Nations Fund for Refugee Children The orchestra was conducted by Quincy Jones & introduction by Noel Coward
Here is the unsurpassable 1958 concert which has been around over the years in various forms, but I think is the most complete version we currently have, from Italian radio, as it includes Noel Coward's introduction in French and English and all of Sinatra's spoken introductions.
In a recent interview, Quincy Jones remembered this show as a highlight of his early life - it was the first time he worked with Sinatra (if you listen very carefully, just before "feel so young", you can here him say "give it up" to the band).
This is beyond doubt among the very best Sinatra live performances, perhaps, vocally, THE best - no where else is he so consistantly brilliant, with each number more flawless than the last. It's impossible to choose a highlight here, but special mention should be given to his only live performance of "Monique", and, arguably, his best ever rendition of "Lady Is A Tramp". In the audience that night, along with Grace Kelly and Prince Ranier, was most of European high society, actors such as Douglas Fairbanks Jnr, and even the author W. Somerset Maugham, making one of his last public appearances.
