The Koch Jazz reissue Arranged/Played/Composed by Jack Montrose was originally released on Atlantic in 1955. Tenor saxophonist Montrose was from the West Coast school of cool jazz, and was significantly influenced by classical music. On this date he was thinking specifically about utilizing every instrument in structured chamber-esque arrangements. Montrose managed to achieve his goal of leading a swinging improvised jazz session without being restricted by this rigid structure. Baritone saxophonist Bob Gordon, pianist Paul Moer, bassist Red Mitchell, and drummer Shelly Manne run through five Montrose originals coupled with popular songs of the time "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "Have You Met Miss Jones." ---Al Campbell, AllMusic Review

Although Jack Montrose was a prosperous jazz saxophonist and arranger, he was well-known for his cool jazz style that was of relaxed tempos and light styles from which formal arrangements and elements of classical music were incorporated.

Bob Gordon was a baritone saxophonist who also specialized in cool jazz and West Coast jazz music. Sadly, the 28 August 1955, Mr. Gordon, who was only twenty-seven years old, was killed by means of an automobile accident while he was on the way to play at a Pete Rugolo concert in San Diego.

Despite the fact that this accident occurred, Mr. Montrose stated that the rapport between the musical tendencies of a saxophone and the mind of one who uses such talent to one's best ability that Mr. Gordon had with his saxophone was the best that he had ever seen between a human and an instrument. ---45worlds.com
