Inevitably, Wilson went on to lead his own big band, and musicians were more than impressed by its secure power and purposeful clarity of tone, a direct extension of Wilson's own manner. But it failed commercially, and its records don't quite match its reputation, largely through charts that are only so-so but which may have come alive in person. The 1939 sides are collected here, along with four more Wilson solos, including a sparkling "China Boy"
