Miles Davis had been a household name in jazz for thirty-five years when this June 1985 footage was shot, constantly reinventing himself, constantly sparking innovative approaches to jazz. His interests at this point had settled on a jazz-rock amalgam, evident from the opening bars of the funky Davis original "One Phone Call" that launches the production (with rising star John Scofield stretching out on guitar); through the easy-going Michael Jackson creation "Human Nature" and a haunting treatment of Cindy Lauper's "Time after Time"; on to more Davis funk on "Johnny M.C."; and closing with an atmospheric treatment of what was a concert staple of Davis's at the time, "Jean-Pierre" from off the Man with the Horn album. The ultimate in chic in sequined jacket and plastic pants, and blowing a black and gold horn, Davis stylistically rejuvenates himself yet again. ---mezzo.tv
