Given RED's retro design and its prominent Bobby Darin quote in the liner notes, it's clear that AMERICAN IDOL finalist John Stevens is going for a classic jazz/pop vibe with his 2005 debut. While other IDOL alumni take on rock and R&B, Stevens ventures into Michael Buble territory here, offering up straightforward renditions of standards popularized by Frank Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, and other legendary 20th-century crooners. Only 16 years old at the time of this album's recording, Stevens possesses a surprisingly full tenor voice, which he showcases particularly well on horn-heavy versions of "Come Fly with Me" and "All of Me." The redheaded singer also charms on "Let's Fall in Love," a sprightly duet with actress Erika Christensen (who proves to be an equally excellent vocalist). For IDOL fans that like their music on the jazzy side, RED is a sure thing. ---cduniverse.com
