The always excellent Verve Jazz Masters series offers another winner here. Over an hour of varied material from the 40's thru the 60's. Highlights includes: another rendition of the famed "Body and Soul" solo, a gorgeious duet (duel?) with Ben Webster, an AWSOME unaccompanied solo "Picasso" (alone worth the price of admission), a heart-rending "Night and Day", and a total of 62 minutes of the mother of all (tenor) sax players. Makes a nice compliment to "Retrospective". The sound quality is very good, so if you can't abide the marginal fidelity of old 30's and 40's recordings (before tape was used in the studio), this is the Coleman Hawkins collection for you. --- Johnny Hodges
