Some but not all of Eddie Condon's studio recordings for Decca are included on this single CD. Since five of the 20 selections are actually previously unissued alternate takes and several songs are bypassed altogether, this release will probably drive some collectors mad, but the music is consistently enjoyable. The rhythm guitarist heads an impressive outfit (with trumpeter Max Kaminsky, valve trombonist Brad Gowans, clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, Bud Freeman on tenor, and pianist Joe Sullivan) on four titles from 1939 along with a variety of groups from 1944-1946 that feature other top stylists, including trumpeters Billy Butterfield, Bobby Hackett, Yank Lawson, Max Kaminsky, and Wild Bill Davison; trombonists Jack Teagarden and Lou McGarity; baritonist Ernie Caceres; clarinetist Edmond Hall; Tony Parenti; and Joe Dixon; the latter bands perform a variety of standards, including eight George Gershwin songs. Dixieland and small-group swing fans will enjoy this set which serves as a strong example of Eddie Condon's music, at least until a more complete reissue of the valuable recordings takes place. ---Scott Yanow, Rovi
