Christian Thielemann - - conductor

It's a special concert with rare performed works by the younger Wagner from his time in Dresden. Wagner later used themes from Bartholdy's Symphony Nr. 5 in Parsifal. That was the reason, why Bartholdy's symphony was performed in this concert.

Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) was born in Leipzig. He spent most of his childhood and youth in Dresden. Here he attended from 1822 the Kreuzschule. Then he returned to Leipzig to be taught from 1828 to 1830 at St. Nicholas and St. Thomas' School and later for studying at the University. After a learning and traveling theatre stage time by Würzburg, Magdeburg, Königsberg, Riga and Paris he worked from 1843 to 1849 as the Royal Saxon Court Conductor at the Dresden Court Opera. There took place the premiere of Rienzi (1842), Flying Dutchman (1843) and Tannhäuser (1845). Wagner also dealt in Dresden with the Meistersinger poetry, the Nibelungen material, the Tristan subject and he battled for reforms at the Court Theatre. --- slub-dresden.de
