Eugen Jochum - conductor

Last available in Deutsche Grammophon’s bicentenary edition of Wagner’s complete operas, Eugen Jochum’s 1975 Die Meistersinger now resurfaces on its own, courtesy of Arkivmusic.com’s on-demand reprint program, complete with the original multi-lingual booklet notes and libretto. Note that this reprint replicates DG’s initial 1990 CD edition rather than the label’s 2009 Originals Series remastering. The latter is out-of-print on CD, but available as a download. In any event, Jochum’s Meistersinger stands the test of time extremely well.

The warm, robust, and carefully balanced sonics haven’t dated a bit, while Jochum’s flexible and vibrant conducting provides ideal support for the singers, with not a single dead spot, misjudged tempo, or bumpy transition in sight. Indeed, you almost could take dictation from the Act 2 riot’s maze of solo vocal lines, choral interjections, and orchestral counterpoint.

As Hans Sachs, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is in fabulous voice, paying equal attention to both words and music, notably in the monologues. Yet for a truly full-bodied bass-baritone voice, Peter Lagger may prove more immediately striking as Pogner. It’s wonderful to reconnect with the 34-year-old Placido Domingo in his early prime as one of the most ardent, clear, and musically accurate Walthers on disc. While many Beckmessers understandably veer toward caricature, Roland Hermann sings more than enacts.

Horst Laubenthal’s David stands out for his lyrical and nuanced Act 1 discourse on the proper modes for constructing a prize song. His love interest Magdalena comes alive through Christa Ludwig’s marvelous characterization. However, Catarina Ligendza’s tendency to sing Eva under pitch (the higher the flatter) is a liability, and you especially notice it in her extended Act 2 scene with Sachs (Gut’n Abend, Meister), as well as in the high B capping “O Sachs! Mein Freund”, and in the Quintet. That shouldn’t deter Wagner fans from adding this highly distinct and still enchanting Meistersinger to their collections. --- arkivmusic.com
