This is a reissue of parts of a set of recordings from the 1970s (and some from 1990) first released as a set in 1998 as part of Philips's Vivaldi Edition. It contains some of Vivaldi's sacred music for solo voice and for which together make up some of Vivaldi's very finest work which is often exciting, often wonderfully beautiful and always deeply satisfying, although important pieces from the original edition like Stabat Mater, Nulla in mundo pax sincera and Juditha Triumphans are missing here.
The musicians and singers here are excellent, many of them real stars like Felicity Lott, Ann Murray, Anthony Rolfe Johnson and so on and Negri is a fine conductor, but for me this set hasn't aged very well. The style of performance feels very out of kilter with what I want in baroque music, with a lot of vibrato and rather grand romantic gestures, and it lacks the supple spring in the step this music often needs. I far prefer the simple, limpid loveliness of Emma Kirkby with Christopher Hogwood - also from the 1970s but far ahead in ideas of performance ( eg. Vivaldi : Gloria (Nulla in mundo pax sincera)).
None of this is helped by the recording, which is set in often very resonant acoustics with the choir sounding distant from the microphones so that they have a rather turgid, indistinct air which saps some of the power and zing from pieces like the Gloria in D. --- Sid Nuncius, amazon.com
