This enterprising disc offers the rarely heard suite from Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Polish” opera, Pan Voyevoda. In keeping with the setting, the individual movements consist largely of ethnic dances: a Krakowiak, Mazurka, and Polonaise. In between comes a delicious interlude called “Claire de lune”, yet another sample of musical moonlight to place next to Beethoven and Debussy. The other rarity is the overture and lullaby from the one-acter Boyarïna Vera Sheloga, originally conceived as a sort of prelude to the earlier opera The Tsar’s Bride. The other works are all somewhat better known, but recordings of them are not exactly plentiful, so this disc earns an easy recommendation for the value of the repertoire, the relaxed but always musical performances, and the decent recorded sound. At Naxos’ budget price, here’s a fine way to discover how much more fine orchestral music there is to Rimsky-Korsakov aside from Shéhérazade. ---David Hurwitz, classicstoday.com
