Ravel – Works for Violin Cello and Piano (2002)
Trio for Piano, Violin & Cello in A minor 01 I. Modéré 02 II. Pantoum: Assez Vif 03 III. Passacaille: Très Large 04 IV. Finale: Animé Sonata for Violin & Piano No.2 in G major 05 I. Allegretto 06 II. Blues: Moderato 07 III. Perpetuum Mobile Sonata for Violin & Cello 08 I. Allegro 09 II. Très Vif 10 III. Lent 11 IV. Vif, Avec Entrain 12 Sonata for Violin & Piano No.1 in A minor (Posthumous) Renaud Capuçon, violin Gautier Capuçon, cello Frank Braley, piano
Of all the recordings (and there are now many) of the Capucon brothers, this remains my favorite. The wonderful intensity, beauty of sound, sometimes edgy interaction between the players (particularly in the Violin and Cello Sonata) and natural musicality of these performances makes for a wonderful 70+ minutes of listening.
Braley's contribution in the very difficult piano parts is every bit their match, as is the wide-ranging Virgin recorded sound.
There are many outstanding versions of these works available. For combination of repertoire, performance and recorded sound, this cd stands very high on the recommended list! If you do not know Ravel's chamber music, this cd and a recording of the String Quartet are the way to begin exploring. Enjoy! --- Panatropebax, amazon.com
