One more instalment of the historical Phillips Haydn series. Armida must have been a popular girl as many composers have written about her. Here the opera offers everything one expects from an early work. Beautiful pure music, virtuoso arias and plenty recitatives. Jessy Norman was in her prime when she recorded this but does not come across as technically equipped enough to tackle the role. Also, her tone is rich but unclear and ends up making the role, especially in the recitatives, rather dull. By contrast, Norma Burrowes is a much more pleasant singer who often does lovely things as Zelmira. Ahnsjö suffers a bit on top but in middle and lower regions his voice is good and he's overall absolutely fine as Rinaldo. But it is Ramey's Idreno that makes this recording worth getting. He is totally in his element in this Baroque bass role that demands incredible agility from the bass voice. He does things I thought were only possible by coloratura sopranos. A more up-to-date recording is available with Bartoli who is a more valid Armida and Harnocourt who sometimes offers more details than Dorati but who don't have an equally fine supporting cast. Plus, I wouldn't want to be without one of Ramey's best recordings. --- Armindo (Greece), amazon.com
