German conductor, choirmaster, organist, and harpsichordist Karl Richter (1926-1981) is best remembered for his interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel. He viewed Baroque music as fundamentally impromptu and subjective in nature, and believed that no work from that era should be performed the same way twice. His performances were known for their soul-searching, intense, and festive manner. While his interpretations may have been overshadowed by the historically informed performance practice movement, there is still much to be said about these beautiful performances. ---naxosdirect.com
