Performer:
Emma Kirkby - soprano
The Academy of Ancient Music
Christopher Hogwood – conductor
These recordings were made in the mid-1990s with Emma's voice not quite so liquid and flexible as ten years previously but nevertheless still a delight to hear. She here treats us to the two wedding cantatas BWV 202 and 210 and, for good measure, the arias 'Bist du bei nir' and 'Gedenke doch, mein Geist plus the beautiful 'Schlummert ein' aria from cantata 82. Not surprisingly she pays great attention to detail- note the clarity of rapid scale passages with every note in place. As in several other Kirkby recordings, she is more than adequately supported by Christopher Hogwood and a small group from the Academy of Ancient Music. Decca's very informative booklet provides all libretti in the original German plus English and French translations. I have given only four stars to this recording mainly because I'm not so keen on the wedding cantatas compared to much else of Bach's output. I get more out of the Coffee and Peasant cantatas, especially Kirby's fine recording of them. ---J. R. M. Bailes, amazon.com
