Glinka--Russlan & Ludmilla Overture New York Philharmonic Leonard Bernstein – conductor (CBS Masterworks – Great Performers 56)
I bought this recording on LP over 25 years ago, and it is still one of my very favorites. It took me a long time to find it on CD, but here it is and I am so glad to have it. All the pieces are fantastic and vivid pictures of Old Czarist Russia. You can just see the caravan of Tartars on their strutting camels in Borodin's "Steppes of Central Asia"; Likewise, one can see the sun rising over the flowing Moskva River in Musorgsky's "Dawn on the Moskva River". Ippolitov-Ivanov's "March of Sardar" is very rousing, and Gliere's "Russian Sailor's Dance" ends in a glaring frenzy.
Maestro Leonard Bernstein and the New York Phil. unlock every morsal of colorful Russian flavor from each piece. ---Joe Anthony "Joe Anthony" (Massachusetts, USA)
