Giuseppe Valentini’s music was largely unknown until recent times. The concerto for 4 violins (opus 7n11) - his supreme masterpiece - was the only piece to excite even mild interest. The rest of his works were overshadowed by those of Vivaldi, Corelli and Locatelli, the “great” composers of the period. The realization that Valentini was an important composer of intalian instrumental music dureing the first half of the 18th century is a recent development. His works are characterized by originality, unusual use of musical fors, and by his ambition to set himself apart from Corelli.
Valentini was also a talented painter and poet. His multiple abilities allowed him to enjoy a true monopoly among churches and collegia of Roma; his works were published throughout Europe, and at one point he even represented a threat to Corelli himself. Valentini was quickly forgotten, though, in part because of Charles Burney’s severe appraisal of him : Geminiani, then exiled in London, had reported to Burney that the novel charms of Valentini’s works could not supplant the talent apparent in Corelli’s compositions. Ensemble 415 comes back to recordings with a new team made of talented and renowned violinists trained by Chiara Banchini. This project enables each of them to play a solo concerto and to gather to propose his supreme masterpiece : the concerto for 4 violins opus 7, n11. This record received the best awards in France : Diapason d’or, 10 de Répertoire and Recommandé de Classica and sold over 15 000 copies. “Style elegance, balance, refinement, flowing ornementation, somptuous sound : the new arcadians of Chiara Banchini play ideally this spiritual son of Corelli who opens the way to Vivaldi... Fascinating and exquisitely played” Jean-Claude Travers Diapason 2002.
