The life and career of Thomas Schippers were drastically cut short by his untimely death in 1977 at the age of 47. The music world has remained largely indifferent following his death and astonishingly little has been written about him. There are few commemorative events of any sort nor is there a significant amount of biographical information available considering the volume and quality of his performances. He made a large contribution to American cultural life by championing various American composers (Samuel Barber, Ned Rorem, Frank Proto) and presenting their works with a most perceptive interpretation. A brilliant conductor of symphonic literature, his direction of the opera repertoire was even more compelling. ---thomasschippers.it
