Not for nothing is it often said that `there is no instrument like the human voice'. This 2 CD box set confirms this statement in leaps and bounds. Released in July 2004 by Decca several months after the release of Heavenly Adagios in Oct 2003, Decca went one better and released a 2 cd set of all choral versions of popular classics. It was a pleasant discovery for me to find that many a piece of music I had known only the orchestral version, also had or could be written for the voice. Such pleasant surprises include the vocal rendition of Barbers adagio for strings, Bach's air on G string, Rodrigo's concerto de Arunjuez, Mozart's Piano concerto no 21, Tchaikovsky's Piano concerto no1, Beethoven's symphony no 7, but the piece de la resistance was Schubert's quintet in C major. If you have ever doubted the ability and versatility of the human voice you need to listen to this on disc 2 track 4.
Apart from the above there are many popular choral favourites like Jesus joy of man's desiring, Ave Maria by Bach/Gounod, Mozart's Ave Verum etc. There were some pleasant gems of music I discovered that gave me added pleasure e.g Stanford's blue bird, Simple gifts (traditional); Rutter's what sweet music, Shenandoah and Taverner's song for Athene. This 2 CD compilation is a great revelation in the versatility of the human voice. --- Uenna (London), amazon.com
