As I have stated in many of my previous reviews, I am a huge fan of the Sony Essential Classics (SEC) budget series. Most of the recordings feature classic and often definitive performances featuring the likes of George Szell, Eugene Ormandy, Robert Casadesus, Isaac Stern and Rudolf Serkin among others. On this collection of Trumpet Concertos, half of the selections are led by Claudio Scimone and I Solisti Veneti, and the other half by George Malcolm and the English Chamber Orchestra. Soloists Helmut Hunger, Andre Bernard and Heinz Holliger give first-rate performances on some of the most popular Baroque music for trumpet ever written. Trumpet fans should rejoice in the fact that there are several other excellent collections available for the instrument, including a title in the EMI Seraphim Series and the Andre/Karajan album in EMI's Great Recordings of the Century series. --- Michael B.
