When Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau first recorded together, the combination was not an obvious one. Metheny has long been in the very top league of jazz guitarists; but he is of a different generation from Mehldau, whose reinvention of the piano trio has often seemed to consist more in what he leaves out than what he actually plays.

So much of this evening, the magnificent pair proved that they are great players. They were at their best mood. Playing melancholic tunes. They touched all the points of a professional jazz players. They played tunes as though they were just plainly rehearsing for the next show. Without the underpinning the quality of their music. The band played all the way alternated the rhythm while both stars soloed over one another.
