Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers was one of the finest and most enduring musical units of modern Jazz. During their nearly thirty years of existence, the Jazz Messengers have boasted some of the most renowned figures of the genre. The mid-'60s formation heard and seen on this previously unissued Italian performance also features an all star lineup, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, long-time Messenger Wayne Shorter, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Reggie Workman. On drums, of course, we have the leader, the inimitable Art Blakey acting as a true engine throughout the performance. With the exception of Workman, the rest of the group had been playing together since mid-1961 (Jymie Merritt was the bassist until mid-1962). Thus, by the time of this concert they were already a well-rehearsed unit. The program includes four well known standards plus a Wayne Shorter composition ("Children of the Night") and a Cedar Walton tune ("Mosaic"), both of which had first been recorded in the studio for the album Mosaic on October 2, 1961.
