This 2009 tribute to the great Stevie Ray Vaughan is for six-string diehards: they are the ones who will recognize the names Howard Hart, James Ryan, Carlo Fragnito, Steve Booke, Doug Doppler, Larry Van Fleet, and POM; they are the ones who will enjoy that these are all-instrumental recordings; they are the ones who will appreciate the approximations of SRV’s tone and attack on the verses and signature riffs, as well as how the guitarists stray off track on their own solos, revealing some measure of their own styles. As a group, they’re all so faithful to Stevie that they seem to be stuck in the ‘80s in terms of their production -- it’s all big, clean, and precise, the solo tones not heard much in 2009 outside of a John Mayer record -- and that makes the excavation of Buddy Guy and Junior Wells playing “Stormy Monday” stick out a bit like a sore thumb at the end. Still, everybody’s heart is in the right place and there’s a lot of solid genre playing here, which may appeal to fanatics of SRV and blues guitar alike. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
